Procrastinating

Alright, not going to lie, I'm a fan of the "my day in pictures" style post. So, here goes.
Oh, by the way, this isn't actually from today, but we can pretend I get dressed on Sundays.
Outfit:
Ring I made out of a piece of wire... it's nearly impossible to get a good detail picture out of a macBook. Plus, my manicure from prom (nice and simple, right?).
Feeling: Boredom. Slash frustration over the fact that I'm writing an essay which just won't die.

Post Secret Sunday

Wow, for the first time in what feels like a really long time, I actually forgot it was Sunday. I went to go look at The Sartorialist and as I scrolled down to the "Blogs We Love" I saw the Post Secret link and realized Sunday secrets had 100% slipped my mind.{From the Post Secret Blog}

Well, back to trying to pull a three page Spanish essay out of thin air. At least I have Franz Ferdinand to get me through.

Kitsune Noir

Recently, while reading the blog Design is Mine, I came across this other fantastic blog/website called Kitsune Noir.  Summer, of Design is Mine, highlighted the awesome free desktop wallpaper downloads.  I've gotten a bunch for myself, and rotate them on a half-hourly basis through my background, it's a great way to have some cool art to look at on your computer, and it definitely spices things up.  However, Kitsune Noir is also an awesome blog, so check it out!

Adventure

I've been reading Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer for the past 4 hours or so and I like what page 115 has to offer. Food for thought:

"Chris just didn't like being told what to do. I think he would have been unhappy with any parents; he had trouble with the whole idea of parents."

A lot of the time, parents don't have much respect for their kids; they don't consider us adults and they don't see that we have ideas of our own and we have our own way that we like to do things. Chris McCandless didn't like being told what to do. He wanted to find his own path and not have his parents so involved in making his decisions in life. I dislike that parents have so much control over their children's lives as they do. What if kids weren't so limited in their adventures? Would children grow up to be less rigid, depressed, pessimistic adults?

Be adventurous today. It doesn't have to be anything big like base jumping or anything, but make something to eat without a recipe or reconstruct an old t-shirt without a pattern. Crawl out of the shell that you are comfortable in and experiment a little.

Smells like...

The other day I was told I smelled like the sun. I kind of liked the thought of that. It gave me images of a sun goddess or something equally ridiculous. Also, it is very summer-y today (AKA 90 degrees out) so here are some bloom-filled pictures for you.

Adieu

So, like Lilia, I'm here to say that Wacky Wednesday is going on vacation for a little while. I've gotten so bored of it that I seem to be having some trouble finding interesting tutorials to send you. Not to say that Wacky Wednesday is in the graveyard forever, it's just not going to be as frequent as it has been. On that note, I did find one thing over the past week that I quite liked, which was a tutorial for freezer paper stencils. Make sure you check 'em out. Link.

This is probably the best video sequel ever. In response to the SNL skit "Jizz In My Pants," Ms.Taken has produced "Puke In My Mouth." And I love it.

Tradition v. the rest of the world

This picture is from the BBC website (actually, BBC Mundo, but we can pretend I'm a normal English-speaking person) from the "Day in Pictures" from 5/18. I would give the link, but I forgot to save it and I'm too lazy to find it.

Lately I've been looking for some inspiration. Something to tell me whether I should be doing my homework, doing my artwork, or doing my housework. Something to tell me if I should be watching Law And Order or trying to make some within my home. I still don't know, and I couldn't give you any answers if you needed them right now. But I like this picture, that I know.

I like how they're still carrying on their traditions (they're in Indonesia), but that's greatly contrasted by the vast mountains, giving the idea that there's so much more to the world. Which is intriguing, but also doesn't help me find my way. Which is more important: the people and their tradition, the reason the picture was taken, or the background, possibly chosen to relay a message?

We've always been told that our generation is the future and that we're full of change. So do we carry on as we've been told, as our parents did and those before? Or acknowledge the world, all of it, and embrace our new, expanded way of life?

Etsy Addiction

So, it's been a while (oh man I'm having so much trouble spelling today). Lately I haven't been feeling very inspired to do Etsy Addiction. That's probably pretty obvious by this sucky one, but this will probably be the last. I'm going to try and find a new internet muse because I just can't do etsy anymore. I just cannot.

Oh my word, doing this and having so much difficulty with the weird alignment and underlining reminded me of why this is so miserable.

So uh, what now?

The one comparison that worked for prom last night was how it resembled a bat mitzvah, complete with the cha-cha slide and cotton eye joe, but with fancier attire, mani-pedis, and curling iron hairdos. I know I said that I wasn't sure about going, but I wouldn't have done it differently if I had to do it over. Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to go to prom and spend less than three hundred dollars. Especially if you beautify yourself. That was one of the funnest parts; going to the nail salon, then doing hair and makeup, getting ready together and taking pictures.

Bottom line: I had a good time.

Now, I have to go to sleep, since we stayed up until 5 at the after party. More on that later.

No-Prom

Well, here it is. Prom. The big kahuna. The night that many a terrible, and also not so terrible movie has been based on or around. The event that's associated with drama, horrible dresses, up-do's, makeup, the perfect date. It's this, and so much more.

And I'm here to say that I won't be going. Mind you, I have nothing against the prom establishment, I just don't really want to go. In my mind, prom is just another Saturday night, plus lots of money and a dress you're probably only going to wear once. Maybe this is a cynical outlook, maybe not.

So, on this Saturday night, just like so many others, I'll be enjoying myself in my craft corner (just kidding, but I wish I had one) and relaxing. I won't have spent upward of five hundred dollars on the next three hours or stayed up inordinately late. And my life is just as rich without this time-honored tradition.

Pre-Prom

Tomorrow is officially prom. So this afternoon was spent in preparation of the event, of course. First, a group of four of us headed over to get mani-pedis and the place was full of girls from our high school. It was a little ridiculous at times. Then, after a quick break for pizza from Whole Foods, me and M went back to mah crib to try out hair styles. I wasn't very helpful for M seeing as I fail at curling hair, but she did mine really pretty!

This isn't a very good picture, but the curls were basically perfect. I sent her home with a decent amount of CDs to put on her computer as her payment so it's all good.

Anyways, I have to go get my beauty sleep now. I'll be sure to give a more comprehensive report sometime next week, complete with embarassing pictures and after party details.

Lily Love

I was going to post Lily Allen's new video for her single "Not Fair," but I don't like it all that much (it's Western themed, weird) so instead I'll share a few of my faves with you.

Wacky Wednesday

Mondays Are Rough

It's Saturday Night...

Last night I stayed up in order to watch Justin Timberlake host SNL for the third time. It was funny, yeah, but I'm really not that into SNL. For an hour and a half show, it's probably about as much content as an episode of The Hills (not much.) It would probably be better if I had been multi-tasking as I watched it, or hanging out with other people because with no distractions, it's just, well, boring most of the time.

As for the sketches themselves, they were pretty good. Most of Justin's shorts were continuations from previous shows. For those of you familiar with D*** in a Box, you might enjoy this digital short.


And if you don't watch this next bit, you'll probably feel a bit out of the loop come Monday.

Even though last night's episode produced plenty of quote-worthy moments, I don't think SNL can keep it up for much longer... That is unless they acknowledge that Andy Samberg is gold. Pure gold.

So, you're over the hump, but there's still a whole two days of work until Friday night (AKA party time). Therefore, we have the Thursday Slump. Here's a little lolcats love to get you through the day.

Wacky Wednesday

I break from studying US history (possibly one of my least favorite subjects thus far) to bring you yet another Wacky Wednesday. It's been a crazy, stressful, hectic week, but from it has come some pretty neat tutorials, and possibly one of my new favorite songs of all time. And so it goes...

The first cool tutorial I have this week is for a super cute laptop cozy! Last year I got a Built one, but they're really expensive, and personally, I'm not the biggest fan of the color choices..so, this seems like the perfect alternative.

Next, I figured since it's spring, going on summer, that I should probably feature some sort of spring-like blouse for your creative wanderings. It actually comes from an oxford shirt, and requires very simple sewing techniques, for those of you who aren't attached to your machines as much as I am.

The last tutorial this week was found by Carolyn, and looks super cool, for all your tight adorning needs. It's from Park and Cube, check 'em out. Thanks Carolyn!

And last of all, is the song Down the Line by José González. Lately, I've been listening to him a lot, mostly enamored by his sexy dark voice, amazing harmonies, and soulful music. This one, however is slightly more upbeat, but still has that signature feel. The rhythm has so much motion to it. Ok, well, anyway, I just totally music-nerded myself out there, and I'll just leave you with the music video (which is incidentally similarly weird to the one for Big Mistake, so maybe just listening to the song would be a good idea too). Adventures of a Mix CD

I'm currently making M a CD because she made me one (actually now she's made me two) and I have yet to return the favor. I'm trying to make it as good as possible, but I have never paid for a song on iTunes and I am really struggling with navigating the dark (free) underbelly of the music download world. So this CD may be lacking (my apologies). I tried desperately to get my hands on the Lykke Li CD but it appears it's in New York with my brother so I'll just have to wait.

Oh man, I just checked the playlist I set up to burn this mix, and there's 24 songs in it. Oops! I guess I was doing better than I thought. 

During my search through my iTunes, I found this band "Thieves Like Us" which I had gotten through one of the Urban Outfitters playlist downloads. I was really liking it so I looked them up and I found out that they are now known as "The Factory Party," due to a name change, which is pretty confusing seeing as there's like three myspace pages for one band now. But here's a video of the band performing their song No Control live.  And here's the link to their current myspace page (I think).

Wait Wait...

Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me! is currently one of my favorite radio shows. Alex probably introduced me to it, as it airs on NPR and she is a public boradcasting junkie. The show, more eventful and definitely more hilarious than other broadcasts, is a weekly news quiz where callers dial in and are asked questions about the past week's events. There is, in addition, a great prize if the caller answers his questions correctly: Carl Kasell's coveted voice on your voice mail/answering machine message.
While the show airs at 11 every Saturday morning, I wait so patiently for Saturday night to roll around so I can download their podcast onto my ipod and fall asleep laughing, because I never wake up early enough to catch the whole program. Tune in if you aren't doing anything.

P.S.
I googled Carl Kasell and the profile picture on his facebook fan page is of him with "I'm in ur machine, answerin ur calls" written Lolcats style. Classic.

May Day

The first day of May is something BIG. It is hyacinths blooming, getting the boat out of the barn, wearing flowery dresses, replenishing the sandal stock, and laying out in the sun with some good tunes. I refuse to define spring with school work, but it majorly drags to sit inside, typing essays, instead of hiking. Spring is twice as good as fall. My favorite season has changed. After the bleakest of winters, there is nothing more satisfying than coming back from April vacation to 70 degree weather and plenty of sun to get a terrible burn.
While warm weather has returned, this week has been a bother, and I'm glad it's almost over. The voice of Joey Ryan has kept me going. Here's his single California which has been on repeat since Monday afternoon.
